Temperature controller
General description
Our TMP-5a temperature controller is designed to prevent
small or medium sized experimental animals from cooling off
while kept in a stereotaxic frame. The main unit controls the
temperature of a heating plate placed under the experimental
animal. The required temperature ('Reference setting') can be set
using straightforward front panel controls. The temperature of
the heating pad, or alternatively the temperature sensed by a
rectal thermometer, ('Measured value') is continuously telegraphed
back to the main unit and appropriate heating currents are
applied when necessary. The DC current supplied to the heating
plate is essentially noise-free making this system suitable for the
most demanding electrophysiological applications such as extra-
or intracellular recordings and voltage or patch-clamp studies in
vivo.
The entire set-up is commanded by a state of the art
microcontroller. Temperature of the heating plate (or the rectal
probe) is sensed by a top of the line thermal sensor (DS 18S20)
and reported back to the main unit. The firmware of the
microcontroller is capable of producing the required temperature
through calculating the heat capacity, the thermal time constant
and through minimizing the thermal hysteresis of the the system
to be controlled. Plug and play simplicity, reliable performance
and reasonable pricing make this model the choice of many
investigators using various stereotaxic techniques.
Heating plates fit in all stereotaxic frames. Small, medium or
large sizes are recommended for mice, rats or cats (or similarly
sized animals), respectively.

Front panel controls:
Mains: Power switch that turns the unit on or off.
F (Function): Activation of this button saves the temperature
values set by the 'Up' or 'Down' arrow buttons. The
system defaults to these saved values upon the next
power-up. Pressing the 'F' button jumps to the main menu
at any time.
Up and Down Arrow Buttons: Set the required actual
temperature or the maximum selectable temperature. The
former can be changed at any time. The latter can be set
when the unit is turned on while the 'F' button is being
pressed. Save either of these values for future use by
pressing the 'F' button after the temperature selection is
made.
Liquid Crystal Display (LCD): During normal operations, a
4x16 character blue-backlit LCD panel displays the set
(required temperature or 'Reference setting') and the
actual temperature ('Measured value') reported back by
the heating plate or by other external temperature
sensors such as a rectal thermometer . In fault
conditions, an error message will appear and a warning
beep sound will be heard.
Heating: This LED is turned on when current flows through the
heating pad supplied from the main unit.
Warning sound: A signal warns to faulty operating conditions
and an error message appears on the LCD display.

Back panel controls:
AC input: Universal grounded power input.
Heating plate: A three-pronged lockable connector powers the
heating plate. Pin-out is as shown. Sensor input refers to the
internal temperature sensor (DS 18S20) built in the heater plate.
Toggle switch: Toggles the source of the temperature sensing
between the 'Internal' (heater plate) and the optional 'External'
(e.g. rectal temperature probe) digital thermometers.
Sensor input: An external digital thermometer (DS 18S20) such
as the optional rectal temperature probe can be connected here.

Heater plates
Sturdy, water-proof design with stainless
steel cover and non-skidding rubber feet.
One control unit powers one heater plate
at a time.
Your selection is:
Small: 115 x 80 mm, Power: 12 W
Medium: 170 x 115 mm, Power: 24 W
Large: 330 x 145 mm, Power: 36 W
Connecting cable length is 70" (180
cm) for all plates. A built-in DS 18S20
digital thermometer reports the plate's
actual temperature back to the control
unit. An M4 screw with hex nut is provided
for grounding if necessary.

Using the rectal temperature probe
Extreme care should be taken when a rectal temperature probe is
used. The heater plate - animal combination results in a great
thermal hysteresis, as high as 6 to 8 °C. In simple words, the system
may overheat the animal. To prevent this, always set the maximum
selectable temperature to not higher than 36 °C. See the 'Front
panel controls' section. Note that an error message and warning
sound appears if the rectal probe does not report an increase in
temperature while the heater plate is being powered. Omit rectal
temperature probe unless it is absolutely necessary.
Rectal probe lenght: 70" (180 cm).
